UN Report Urges Limiting Climate Warming Beyond 1.5 Degrees

A new United Nations report says the world is unlikely to keep warming below 1.5°C.

Temperatures have already crossed that level for some periods in recent years.

This does not necessarily mean the planet will stay above it permanently, but it is a serious warning.

Heat waves and floods are already hurting people in many regions.

The report says every extra fraction of warming makes dangerous changes more likely.

It estimates that the best possible outcome may be warming of about 1.8°C.

This is a warning, not a new goal.

Countries would need to cut greenhouse gases and remove some carbon from the atmosphere to limit the damage.
