Taiwan Rebukes Xi After Push for Tougher US Stance

China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, but Taiwan’s government rejects that claim.

On Thursday, Chinese leader Xi Jinping spoke with US President Donald Trump in Washington.

A Chinese account said Xi asked the United States to oppose Taiwan independence.

Taiwan objected and said only its people should decide the island’s future.

The United States supports Taiwan in important ways, including selling it weapons, even though the two do not have formal diplomatic ties.

Some analysts worry that stronger US wording could make it less clear whether America would help Taiwan in a conflict.

Trump has previously described some Taiwan arms sales as a negotiating tool.

However, one analyst said Trump has not shown he would exchange support for Taiwan for a major deal with China.
