India’s 2047 Ambitions Raise Need for Stronger Navy

India wants to become a developed and influential country by 2047.

Much of its trade travels by ship through the Indian Ocean.

A strong Navy can help protect those ships and trade routes.

India currently has two aircraft carriers, which are large ships that support military aircraft.

Navy planners say three carriers would make it easier to keep ships ready on both the eastern and western coasts.

India is also building more naval equipment at home, creating industrial skills and jobs.

INS Vikrant was built mostly in India and involved many suppliers.

The government must decide how much money and time to devote to building the larger fleet India may need.
