Iran and US Clash Over Conditions to Reopen Strait

Iran and US Clash Over Conditions to Reopen Strait

Iran and the United States disagree about whether the Strait of Hormuz is open.

Iran says it will reopen the waterway only after the United States takes certain practical steps.

Iran is preparing a list of conditions for doing that.

The United States says the strait is already open and that mines have been cleared.

However, the United States also says its naval blockade of Iranian ports is continuing.

Qatar’s prime minister visited Iran to discuss the waterway and possible diplomacy.

Only five ships crossed the strait in one 24-hour period.

No direct US-Iran talks are currently scheduled.
