DERC permits Delhi discoms to impose additional fuel surcharge
Delhi gets electricity from companies called discoms.
There is a special government body called DERC that makes sure electricity prices are fair.
In June, the fuel and electricity that these companies buy became much more expensive.
The power companies said they were spending more money than they planned.
They asked DERC for permission to charge customers extra to cover this.
DERC said yes, but only allowed part of what the companies asked for.
This extra charge is added to the electricity bill people receive next time.
The charge is a small percentage on top of the fixed and energy parts of the bill.
So households in Delhi may see a slightly higher electricity bill because making and buying power cost more this time.
Delhi's power regulator DERC allowed three discoms to charge an additional fuel and power purchase adjustment surcharge (FPPAS) of over 7-8 per cent for June.
The additional surcharge is over and above the capped 10 per cent FPPAS and will be included in the next billing cycle for consumers.
The discoms BRPL, BYPL and TPDDL had claimed FPPAS for June at rates of 31.64 per cent, 24.02 per cent and 23.71 per cent, respectively.
In its August 10 order, DERC permitted an additional surcharge of 7.94 per cent (BRPL), 7.43 per cent (BYPL) and 8.50 per cent (TPDDL), bringing total FPPAS to 17.94 per cent, 17.43 per cent and 18.50 per cent.
The surcharge, which is a percentage of fixed charge and energy charge components of the electricity bill, passes changes in fuel and power procurement costs to consumers.
