Mumbai Redevelopment Boom May Strain Civic Infrastructure

Mumbai Redevelopment Boom May Strain Civic Infrastructure

Mumbai is rebuilding many buildings and adding more homes.

A study says this could make the city more crowded and put extra pressure on services people rely on.

These include water, electricity, roads, public transport, sewers, waste collection and fire response.

The study says Mumbai’s current water supply is lower than the amount projected to be needed by 2041.

New water projects are planned, but the report also warns that more people and taller buildings could raise other demands.

Firefighters may need more than tall ladders to reach people safely.

The study says roads, fire lifts, alarms and escape routes also matter.

A local civic group leader wants assessments of how much growth neighbourhoods can handle before more redevelopment is approved.
