Bhopal Tightens Birth and Death Certificate Rules, Adds Checks

Bhopal has introduced tougher checks for birth and death certificates.

The rules took effect on October 5.

People registering an event late may need permission or an order from a magistrate.

Officials will also check requests to change details on certificates more carefully.

Applicants for a death certificate must provide the original crematorium or graveyard receipt.

The law also sets up electronic databases for birth and death records.

For people born after the law began, a birth certificate can prove their date and place of birth for several official uses.

Officials say the changes are meant to make fake certificates harder to obtain, but the extra checks may make some applications take longer.
