Gandhi, Nehru, Jinnah And Faiz On India's Independence Day

Gandhi, Nehru, Jinnah And Faiz On India's Independence Day

A long time ago, Britain ruled over India.

In 1947, Britain's leader, Clement Attlee, said Britain would leave India.

So on August 15, 1947, India became a free country.

At the same time, a new country called Pakistan was also created.

India's first leader, Jawaharlal Nehru, gave a famous speech in the middle of the night.

The gentle peace leader Mahatma Gandhi was not at the big celebrations.

Instead, he was walking barefoot through villages in a place called Noakhali, asking Hindus and Muslims to promise not to hurt each other.

A poet named Faiz was in Srinagar and wrote a sad poem saying this dawn of independence was not the bright morning people had hoped for.

So independence was a happy time for some, but for many people it was also a sad and scary time.
