Chennai GCC Sets September 1 Waste Segregation Deadline

Chennai GCC Sets September 1 Waste Segregation Deadline

The Greater Chennai Corporation wants large waste producers to sort their garbage where it is created.

They must keep biodegradable, non-biodegradable, sanitary and hazardous waste separate.

This rule will be enforced from September 1.

Officials may fine people or establishments that do not follow it.

The Corporation is also teaching households how to separate their waste.

These lessons started in southern Chennai and will later reach other areas.

Workers are removing old waste from three major dumpyards through a process called biomining.

This work has already helped reclaim land at the dumpyards.
