Ben Gamla Charter Case Reopens Religious Aid Debate

Ben Gamla Charter Case Reopens Religious Aid Debate

Ben Gamla wants to create a charter school in Oklahoma that teaches both regular subjects and religion.

Charter schools receive taxpayer money but are usually operated by private groups.

Oklahoma rejected Ben Gamla’s application.

A judge has now said the organization may continue its legal case.

The judge did not decide whether the school must ultimately be allowed to open.

Oklahoma’s constitution says public money cannot support religious institutions.

However, recent decisions by the Supreme Court of the United States have said governments may not exclude religious groups from benefits offered to others.

Oklahoma can appeal the judge’s decision.

The case could eventually help decide how public education and religion may work together.
