US Sanctions Iran’s Auto, Rail Sectors as Blockade Chokes Shipping
The United States has placed new financial restrictions on several Iranian companies.
The companies make cars or move passengers and goods by train.
The US Treasury says Iran has relied more on roads and railways after a blockade disrupted oil shipments by sea.
The targeted goods include petroleum, fertilizer and chemicals.
Two major Iranian carmakers were included in the sanctions.
Three Iranian railway companies were also designated.
Foreign companies in Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey that supply Iran’s auto industry were targeted too.
The US says the plan is meant to reduce money for Iran’s war and other activities.
One sanctions expert warned that the measures could also hurt ordinary Iranians.
The Trump administration sanctioned Iran’s major automotive and railway companies and foreign suppliers.
The measures are part of Operation Economic Outcast, announced August 24 to reduce Tehran’s funding for the war, missiles, cyberattacks and the IRGC.
Iran Khodro and SAIPA, which Treasury says account for more than 90% of Iran’s domestic auto market, were designated.
The targeted rail companies include Iran’s state railway, Raja Passenger Trains Company and Railway Transportation Company.
Treasury said the sanctions target Iran’s land-based transport alternatives after a US blockade disrupted oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
