French Assembly Approves Assisted Dying Bill in Initial Vote

French Assembly Approves Assisted Dying Bill in Initial Vote

France is considering a new law to allow people with incurable illnesses to get help ending their lives.

The government is voting on it now.

The law would let medical staff provide lethal medication to those who want it, if they meet strict conditions.

People must be seriously ill with no hope of getting better.

Doctors will decide if someone qualifies.

Some people in France and the government support the law, because they believe that it respects individuals' autonomy.

Other people, including some religious groups, are against the law because they believe life must be protected, but these fears seem not to be shared by many French citizens.

The next step is for the Senate to make changes, and then vote on it, and it could become law by 2027.
