A Connoisseur’s Guide to Islay’s Smoky Whisky Character

A Connoisseur’s Guide to Islay’s Smoky Whisky Character

Islay is a small island in Scotland known for making whisky.

Its rainy, peaty land and salty sea air help give many local whiskies smoky, earthy flavours.

The island has 11 distilleries, each making whisky in its own way.

Some, like Lagavulin and Ardbeg, are especially smoky, while Bowmore and Bruichladdich offer other styles too.

Port Ellen Distillery reopened in 2024 after being closed for 40 years.

It released two very old whiskies as a special set called Gemini.

The article also suggests five bottles for people interested in trying Islay whisky.

A festival celebrating malt and music is planned for May 28 to June 6, 2027.
