RBI Backs MDR on Large UPI Transactions for Sustainability

RBI Backs MDR on Large UPI Transactions for Sustainability

India’s central bank supports a new fee for some large UPI payments made to merchants.

The fee is 0.4% when the payment is more than ₹2,000.

It starts on October 15, 2026.

Regular people sending money to one another will not be charged.

Small merchant payments below ₹2,000 will also remain free for merchants.

Customers will not directly pay this fee.

Instead, it will be handled within the merchant payment system.

The RBI says this money can help keep UPI growing and reliable.
