Ex-Envoy Questions Citizenship Proof Demands During Punjab SIR

Ex-Envoy Questions Citizenship Proof Demands During Punjab SIR

India is checking its voter lists through a process called the Special Intensive Revision, or SIR.

Former diplomat Navdeep Suri said some of his information did not match an older Punjab voter list from 2003.

He said he had already given officials his Voter ID and Aadhaar card.

He was later asked to collect a notice and bring documents proving that he is an Indian citizen.

Because he said he was not in India in 2003, officials reportedly asked for his passport.

Suri said he had other documents but worried that many ordinary voters might not.

The process uses older voter lists to help verify current voters.

The Supreme Court has upheld the exercise but said it must be transparent and fair.

It also said the Election Commission cannot itself decide whether someone is an Indian citizen.
