Trinamool Congress Challenges SIR Process
The Trinamool Congress in West Bengal is upset about how the Election Commission is updating the list of voters.
They say that people who have small mistakes in their names, like spelling errors, should not be called for hearings or removed from the list.
The Trinamool also thinks that some new officials, called micro-observers, are unfairly changing decisions made by the usual officials in charge of the voters' list.
The Election Commission says they are following the rules and that micro-observers are just helping.
Recently, the West Bengal government moved three important officers without telling the Election Commission, which made the Election Commission very upset.
They told the government to cancel the moves and follow the rules in the future.
Trinamool demands no summons or deletions for voters with name errors in the SIR process.
The party argues that micro-observers are overruling Electoral Registration Officers without statutory backing.
The Election Commission directed the cancellation of the transfer of three IAS officers deputed for the SIR exercise.
Trinamool met with the state's chief electoral officer to demand withdrawal of notices and corrective measures for name mismatches.
The Election Commission seeks a compliance report on the cancellation of the transfers by Wednesday afternoon.
