Rupee Weakens, IMF Criticizes India's Data
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has given India a 'C' grade for its economic data, saying it's not very detailed and uses old information.
The Indian rupee has been getting weaker, losing about 4% of its value since the start of 2025.
This is because India is buying more from other countries than it's selling, and not as much money is coming into the country from foreign investors.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been trying to help by selling dollars, but the rupee is still under pressure.
The stock market in India is doing well, with the Nifty 50 and Sensex reaching new highs.
People are hoping that the US Federal Reserve and the RBI will cut interest rates soon, which could help the rupee and the stock market.
IMF graded India's national accounts as 'C' due to methodological weaknesses and outdated data.
Rupee depreciated by 4% in 2025 due to a widening trade deficit and reduced capital flows.
RBI intervened in forex markets to manage rupee depreciation, selling $21.8 billion in 2025.
Foreign exchange reserves recovered to $692 billion in November 2025 after a low of $624 billion in January.
Indian stock market indices Nifty 50 and Sensex reached new highs, with positive sentiment driven by expectations of interest rate cuts.
