India Establishes Bureau of Port Security
India is creating a new group called the Bureau of Port Security (BoPS) to keep its ports and coastlines safe.
This group will be in charge of making rules and protecting ports from different dangers like terrorism, smuggling, and cyber-attacks.
The BoPS will work with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to train and check private security groups at the ports.
The goal is to make sure all ports in India are safe and secure.
The BoPS will be like the group that keeps airports safe and will work under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
For one year, the Director General of Shipping will also be the head of the BoPS.
India has established the Bureau of Port Security (BoPS) to oversee the security of its ports and coastline, addressing rising maritime threats.
The BoPS will be a statutory body under the Merchant Shipping Act, 2025, and will be headed by a Director General from the Indian Police Service.
The BoPS will be responsible for policy formulation, standard-setting, and oversight of port security, with a focus on cyber security.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has been designated as a Recognised Security Organisation (RSO) for port facilities, responsible for security assessments, training, and certifying Private Security Agencies (PSAs).
During the one-year transition period, the Director General of Shipping (DGS/DGMA) will function as the Director General of BoPS.
