West Bengal Dispatches 2,630 kg of GI-tagged Darjeeling Mandarins to Calcutta
The West Bengal state agriculture marketing department sent 2,630 kilograms of Darjeeling Mandarins to Calcutta.
These special mandarins have a special tag called a GI tag, which means they come from a specific place and are known for being sweet and juicy.
Most of the mandarins came from a place called Sivitar in the Kurseong subdivision.
The department bought the mandarins from farmers at ₹140 per kilogram and sent them to Calcutta in five batches.
The mandarins will be sold in special government stores called Sufal Bangla.
The department is also working to improve the quality and quantity of mandarins by replacing old plants and teaching farmers better farming methods.
They are also thinking about setting up places to process the fruit in Mirik and Sukhiapokhri.
