US Lifts Sanctions on Syrian President Ahead of Trump Meeting
Imagine Syria's president and another leader had rules placed on them by the U.S. because they were considered a global terrorist threat.
Recently, a big international group called the United Nations Security Council decided to take away these rules.
Because the UN did this, the U.S. government also decided to remove its specific rules, called sanctions, on these two Syrian leaders.
This decision happened just before the Syrian president was scheduled to meet with the U.S. President.
The U.S. Treasury Department updated its records to show these sanctions are no longer in place for the Syrian president and interior minister.
The United States has removed sanctions on Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and Interior Minister Anas Khattab.
The U.S. Treasury Department removed the Specially Designated Global Terrorist designations for both officials.
This action follows a decision by the UN Security Council to lift sanctions on the same Syrian leaders.
The sanctions removal occurs ahead of an upcoming meeting between Syrian President al-Sharaa and US President Donald Trump.
The U.S. previously designated al-Sharaa and Khattab as terrorists.
