Madhya Pradesh's Ladli Behna Scheme Costs Rise Amid Record Debt
The Ladli Behna Scheme in Madhya Pradesh gives money to women every month.
It started in 2023 with about 1.29 crore women getting Rs 1,000 each.
Now, the amount has increased to Rs 1,500, and the government is giving Rs 1,836 crore every month to about 1.2531 crore women.
However, the number of women getting this money has decreased by about 5.7 lakh because some women turned 60 and are no longer eligible.
The government has also stopped adding new women to the scheme.
This scheme costs the state a lot of money, and the state's debt has increased to Rs 4,64,340 crore.
The state now pays Rs 27,000 crore every year just in interest on this debt.
The former Chief Minister started this scheme to help women live with dignity, but now it is one of the biggest expenses for the state.
Madhya Pradesh's Ladli Behna Scheme has increased monthly assistance from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500, with over Rs 1,836 crore transferred to 1.2531 crore women.
The number of beneficiaries has decreased from 1.31 crore to 1.25 crore due to age-based ineligibility and frozen new enrollments.
Total funds transferred in 30 months exceed Rs 48,632.70 crore, with Rs 38,600 crore disbursed under current Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
The state's debt has risen to Rs 4,64,340 crore, with annual interest payments of Rs 27,000 crore.
The scheme's projected cost for 2026-27 is Rs 22,680 crore, amid concerns over rising state debt and financial pressure.
