Tarique Rahman Registers to Vote
Tarique Rahman, a leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has returned to Bangladesh after living in London for 17 years.
He went to the Election Commission office to register as a voter and get an ID card.
He did this by giving his fingerprints and having his eyes scanned.
He also signed papers to run in the upcoming elections from two areas: Dhaka-17 and Bogra-6.
There were many security guards around the office to keep him safe.
The government introduced a new system for voter IDs in 2008, and Rahman was not included because he was living abroad.
Now, he wants to run in the upcoming elections.
Some people from the Awami League party are questioning how he was allowed to register as a voter so close to the election date.
Tarique Rahman, acting chairman of the BNP, registered as a voter and obtained a national identity (NID) card after returning from 17 years of self-exile in London.
He completed the registration process by providing fingerprints and iris scans at the Election Commission (EC) office in Dhaka.
Rahman signed his nomination papers to contest the 13th national parliamentary election from the Dhaka-17 and Bogra-6 constituencies.
The registration process was conducted under tight security with the deployment of the Bangladesh Army, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Ansar, and police.
The Awami League has raised questions about the legality of including Rahman in the voters' list, claiming he is receiving special privileges.
