China’s only children increasingly favor partners without siblings

China’s only children increasingly favor partners without siblings

A study looked at whether people in China care about a future partner’s sibling status.

It found that people without siblings are more likely to choose partners who also have no siblings.

Their chance of making this kind of match was 18.4% higher.

This may be because only children are used to receiving their parents’ attention and resources alone.

They may worry about sharing family resources with a partner’s siblings.

They may also prefer families with fewer competing heirs and fewer complicated relationships.

China’s marriage rates have fallen sharply since 2017.

Marriage registrations also fell in the first half of 2026.
