Meta Restricts AI-Generated Videos of PM Modi
Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, has restricted access in India to two videos posted by the Congress party.
These videos were made using artificial intelligence and show Prime Minister Narendra Modi and businessman Gautam Adani.
The Delhi Police asked Meta to remove these videos, saying they broke some laws.
Meta decided to restrict the videos to avoid legal trouble, even though the videos did not break Meta's own rules.
The Indian government recently changed some rules about what content can be removed from the internet.
These changes specify who can ask for content to be taken down and under what conditions.
Meta restricted access to two AI-generated videos on Instagram and Facebook featuring PM Modi and Gautam Adani after receiving takedown notices from the Delhi Police.
The videos were posted by the Congress party and were generated through artificial intelligence.
Meta received the takedown notices on December 18, citing various legal provisions including Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act and Rule 3(1)(d) of IT Rules.
The Delhi Police invoked Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 336(4) and 340(2), and Section 66C of the IT Act, which deal with forgery, fraudulent use of forged documents, and identity theft.
Meta complied with the notices to avoid losing its safe harbour status and potential criminal penalties, despite the videos not violating its community standards.
