Meghalaya Farmers Earn Carbon Payments for Planting Trees
Farmers in Meghalaya, India, are getting paid for planting trees through a program called MegCare.
This program helps them improve their farms and the environment.
The program is run by Iora, Rabobank, and MBDA, and it has grown to include many farmers and a lot of land.
Farmers earn money based on how much carbon their trees remove from the air.
In the first payment, farmers received a high price for each unit of carbon removed, much more than what farmers usually get.
The program hopes to grow even more, planting trees on even more land in the future.
Meghalaya farmers are receiving carbon payments for planting trees.
The program, MegCare, is a partnership between Iora Ecological Solutions, Rabobank’s Acorn platform, and the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA).
Launched in January 2024, the program has expanded to over 22,000 hectares of land and 10,400 farmers.
Farmers receive carbon income based on carbon removed through agroforestry.
The first round of payments saw each Carbon Removal Unit (CRU) reach EUR 40, the highest per-tonne carbon payment to farmers in India.
