VinFast Edges Out Tesla in Festival Sales, BYD Leads EV Market
Imagine a race for electric cars in India during the busy holiday shopping months!
VinFast, a newer car company, sold a few more cars than Tesla.
But a company from China called BYD sold a lot more than both of them, becoming the leader.
VinFast is building its own factories in India, which helps make its cars cheaper.
Tesla is importing its cars, making them more expensive.
BYD also imports its cars but plans to bring even cheaper models soon.
Even though electric cars are still new in India, lots of companies want to sell them because many people are starting to buy them, and the government wants more electric cars on the road in the future.
VinFast sold 137 electric vehicles (EVs) during India's September-October festival season, slightly surpassing Tesla's 109 units.
BYD dominated the market, selling over 1,100 EVs in the same period, and has sold 3,506 units between April and October.
VinFast is locally assembling vehicles in India, starting with SUVs like the VF6 and VF7 at competitive price points.
Tesla is importing fully-built units, leading to higher prices for its Model Y compared to VinFast's offerings.
India's EV market is nascent but growing, with foreign players investing and local manufacturing becoming a key strategy for success.
