Foreign Holdings of U.S. Treasuries Fall for Second Month

Foreign countries owned fewer U.S. government bonds in July than they did in June.

The total value fell from $9.298 trillion to $9.248 trillion.

Japan and China were the main countries reducing their holdings.

Japan remained the largest foreign holder.

China’s holdings reached their lowest level since 2008.

The United Kingdom increased its holdings and was the second-largest holder.

Foreign investors also took money out of U.S. Treasury securities overall in July.

Investments in U.S. corporate bonds and stocks still brought in money, but stock inflows dropped sharply.

Total money flowing into the United States was lower than in June.
