Shingles Vaccine Linked to Lower Dementia Risk in Study

Scientists studied health records from Wales to look at shingles vaccination and dementia.

They used a rule that determined who could get the vaccine as a kind of natural experiment.

Over seven years, people who were eligible were less likely to receive a new dementia diagnosis.

Their relative probability was 8.5% lower than for those who were not eligible.

The researchers estimated that people who actually got the vaccine might have about a 20% reduction.

The study does not say the vaccine prevents dementia for certain.

It reports evidence of a possible connection.
