Courts Rule on Religious and Endowment Land Issues
The Telangana High Court decided that a religious place in Hyderabad called Sri Ram Hanuman Mutt is actually a temple, not a mutt.
The court said this because old records and government notices always called it a temple.
The person who wanted it to be called a mutt was not successful because the court found that he was trying to take control of the temple's property.
The court also said that once a place is called a temple, it can't be called a mutt.
The judge also said that the person who filed the case came to the court with wrong intentions and dismissed the case.
In another case, the Andhra Pradesh High Court stopped the government from giving long-term leases on temple lands.
The court said the government can't lease these lands to private or charitable groups because the laws are meant to protect the temple properties.
The court will hear more about this next week.
The Telangana High Court ruled that Sri Ram Hanuman Mutt, Nampally, is a temple and not a mutt.
The court upheld the Gazette Notification issued on September 21, 1989, which classified the institution as a temple.
The petitioner argued that the institution was founded as a mutt and contained samadhis, but the court rejected these claims.
The court found that the petitioner approached with unclean hands and dismissed the writ petition.
The Andhra Pradesh High Court stayed the government's decision to permit long-term leases of temple-owned non-agricultural lands.
