Bombay High Court Criticizes Jail for Undertrial Absence
The Bombay High Court is upset because a prisoner who is waiting for his trial was not taken to court for most of his hearings over the past two years.
The court wants to know why this happened and has asked the jail authorities to investigate and report back.
They want to make sure that prisoners are brought to court when they are supposed to be, either in person or through video calls.
Bombay High Court criticized Taloja Central Prison for not producing an undertrial prisoner for court hearings.
The prisoner missed 66 out of 69 court hearings over two years.
The court ordered the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Prisons to investigate and file a report.
The court questioned if producing undertrial prisoners is at the discretion of jail authorities.
The inquiry aims to ensure that prisoners are produced in court either physically or virtually.
