Rupee Weakens Amid Economic Challenges
The Indian rupee has been getting weaker compared to the US dollar over the past year.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) sometimes steps in to help by selling dollars, which makes the rupee stronger for a short time.
But overall, the rupee is weakening because India buys more from other countries than it sells, the US has put high taxes on Indian goods, and investors are not putting as much money into India as they are into other countries.
Recently, the rupee got a bit stronger due to money coming into the country and lower oil prices.
The RBI's forex reserves have also increased, which helps a bit.
But there are still challenges that make the rupee weak.
The rupee has weakened by 6% against the dollar over the past year.
RBI intervened by selling dollars to strengthen the rupee temporarily.
India's trade deficit and high US tariffs on Indian goods contribute to the rupee's weakness.
Foreign investors have sold $18,285 million in Indian stocks year-to-date, affecting the rupee.
The rupee appreciated by 54 paise on December 19, 2025, supported by corporate dollar inflows and lower crude oil prices.
