Kerala Raj Bhavan Renamed Lok Bhavan
The Kerala Raj Bhavan, which is the official home of the Governor, will be renamed Lok Bhavan starting December 1.
The Governor, Rajendra Arlekar, suggested this change during a meeting with other Governors in 2024.
He thought the new name would make the Governor's office feel more open and connected to the people.
The central government agreed and told all states to make similar changes.
Assam and West Bengal have already renamed their Governor's homes.
The idea is to replace old colonial names with ones that feel more modern and democratic.
However, some people, like the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, think this change is just for show and doesn't really make things better.
They say the people in charge need to change their way of thinking and respect the elected governments more.
Ladakh has also renamed its Governor's home to Lok Niwas for the same reasons.
Kerala Raj Bhavan will be renamed Lok Bhavan on December 1, following a proposal by Governor Rajendra Arlekar during the 2024 Governors’ Conference.
The Union Home Ministry directed all states to rename Governor residences as Lok Bhavan to remove colonial-era terminology and promote democratic values.
Assam and West Bengal have already implemented the name change, and Ladakh’s Raj Niwas has been renamed Lok Niwas.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin criticized the renaming, calling it a cosmetic change that does not address the need for respecting elected governments and democratic principles.
The renaming aims to make governance more inclusive and people-centric, though critics argue it is merely symbolic without real reform.
