Odisha: Rising C-sections in Private Hospitals
In Odisha, India, there's a big difference in how babies are born in private and government hospitals.
The government says private hospitals do way more caesarean sections (C-sections) than normal births, while government hospitals do more normal births.
Over the past five years, government hospitals had about 2.37 million births, with most being normal.
Private hospitals had fewer births but did more C-sections than normal births.
The government is worried about this and wants mothers to choose government hospitals for safer and more natural childbirths.
They say government hospitals are better because they focus on normal deliveries and are more affordable.
Odisha government highlights a significant gap in C-section rates between private and government hospitals.
Over the past five years, government hospitals conducted 1,959,918 normal deliveries and 409,718 C-sections.
Private hospitals reported 148,242 normal deliveries and 490,505 C-sections in the same period.
The government encourages pregnant women to opt for government hospitals for safer and more natural childbirths.
Concerns raised about unnecessary surgical interventions and their long-term health implications.
