KMC Revokes Architect's Licence After Garden Reach Collapse
A big warehouse in Garden Reach, a part of Kolkata, fell down in June and hurt many people.
The city’s building office, called the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, found that the architect who designed the building, Supratim Choudhury, did not follow the rules.
He didn’t give the city the paperwork it needed before building started.
Because of this, the city cancelled his licence so he can’t work on new projects.
The city is also looking at the engineer and the reviewer who helped with the building’s design to see if they did anything wrong too.
Kolkata Municipal Corporation revoked architect Supratim Choudhury’s licence after the Garden Reach godown collapse that killed at least 16 people.
KMC cited “dereliction of duties followed by professional misconduct” for Choudhury’s failure to submit required documents under Rule 51 of the KMC Building Rules, 2009.
The collapsed warehouse’s promoters deviated from approved plans and began construction without mandatory approvals.
KMC is also reviewing the roles of geotechnical engineer Shantanu Dutta and structural reviewer Rupak Bandyopadhyay.
Choudhury claimed he signed 20‑25 sanctioned plans annually, but the order found he had not submitted a Letter of Commencement.
