Chaitanya Baghel Accused in Rs 200-250 Crore Liquor Scam
The police in Chhattisgarh have accused Chaitanya Baghel, the son of the former Chief Minister, of making a lot of money (Rs 200–250 crore) from a liquor scam.
They say that during his father's time as Chief Minister, a group of officials and politicians sold illegal liquor, causing a huge loss to the state.
Chaitanya was arrested in July and is accused of helping connect the officials with the liquor syndicate.
The police say the total loss to the state is Rs 3,074 crore, but it might be even more.
Another person involved is Anwar Dhebar, the brother of the Raipur mayor.
Chaitanya's lawyer says the police don't have any real evidence and are making up the case based on statements from people who ran away.
Chaitanya Baghel, son of former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel, allegedly benefited Rs 200–250 crore from a liquor scam.
The scam occurred between 2019 and 2022, involving a 'syndicate' of officials and politicians operating a 'parallel' excise system.
The alleged scam caused a loss of Rs 3,074 crore to the state exchequer, with investigations suggesting the amount could exceed Rs 3,500 crore.
Chaitanya Baghel was arrested in July and accused of acting as a bridge between officials and the liquor syndicate, facilitating the transfer of scam proceeds.
Anwar Dhebar, brother of Raipur mayor Aijaz Dhebar, and several other officials, including former Excise Minister Kawasi Lakhma, are also accused in the case.
