Trade Shifts Prompt Calls for Sharper Legal Thinking

Trade between countries is changing, especially as digital commerce and sustainability rules become more important.

Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said these changes require careful legal thinking.

He spoke at an event marking the ninth anniversary of the Centre for Trade and Investment Law.

The centre advises the government on trade law and negotiations.

The ministry says it has given more than 4,000 legal opinions and helped with nearly 10 trade agreements.

Justice P. S. Narasimha said countries need to protect investments while still being able to make rules for the public good.

Yashvir Singh also described the centre’s work on global trade discussions and disputes.

The speakers said legal expertise helps India respond to changing international trade issues.
