UN Warns Pakistan Over Bushra Bibi's Detention Conditions
The United Nations has warned Pakistan that the conditions in which Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, is being detained are not good.
A UN expert named Alice Jill Edwards said that Bibi is kept in a small, dirty cell with frequent power cuts and is isolated for most of the day.
This could harm her health.
Edwards urged Pakistan to improve the conditions and ensure Bibi has access to legal help and family visits.
Bibi was sentenced to seven years in prison for a corruption case and an additional 17 years in a related case.
The UN has formally raised this issue with the Pakistani government.
UN expert Alice Jill Edwards warns Pakistan about inhumane detention conditions for Bushra Bibi.
Bibi is kept in a small, unhygienic cell with frequent power cuts and in near-total isolation for 22 hours a day.
Conditions are below international standards and pose a threat to Bibi's physical and mental health.
Bibi was sentenced to seven years in a graft case and an additional 17 years in a related corruption case.
Edwards urges Pakistan to improve conditions and ensure Bibi has access to legal counsel and family visits.
