Dalit Demands and Upper-Caste Anxieties in India's Constitution Making

Dalit Demands and Upper-Caste Anxieties in India's Constitution Making

When India was creating its Constitution, different groups had different ideas about what it should include.

Dalit groups, who were often treated unfairly because of their caste, wanted the Constitution to ensure equality and protect them from discrimination.

They demanded things like the right to choose their own jobs, protection from forced labor, and land redistribution.

Upper-caste groups, who had more power and privilege, were worried that the new Constitution might take away their status.

Some of them wanted the Constitution to be based on ancient Hindu scriptures.

The Constitution that was finally made included important protections for Dalits, like outlawing untouchability and providing affirmative action.

This shows that the Constitution was shaped by the demands and struggles of many different people.
