Six French Islamic State Suspects Face Trial, Possible Death Penalty

An Iraqi court has started the trial of six French men accused of being part of Islamic State.

The men had been held in prisons in northeast Syria.

They were reportedly moved to Iraq with dozens of other French detainees.

Iraq is using its counter-terrorism law in the case.

If the men are convicted of certain crimes, they could receive the death penalty.

Their first hearing lasted almost three hours.

The judge postponed the next hearing until October 5 so their lawyers could study the evidence.

Human rights groups want France to bring the men home because they are worried about how the trial will be handled.
