Wall Street Anticipates Bank Mergers Boom
There are about 3,800 commercial banks in America, which is a lot compared to other rich countries.
Recently, there's been a big push for these banks to merge.
This is because being bigger helps them compete better, especially with technology.
Also, the rules and financial situations have made it easier for banks to merge.
So far this year, there have been deals worth $47 billion, which is more than the past two years combined.
Some big banks have even bought smaller ones, pushing their assets over $250 billion, which usually means more regulatory checks.
But now, banks are more confident that regulators won't make things too difficult.
The speed of these deals is also faster than before.
However, there's still some uncertainty about what might happen after the 2026 elections.
But for now, everything seems to be going well for bank mergers.
America has around 3,800 commercial banks, with a steady decline from 12,300 in 1990.
Banking deals worth $47bn have been announced in 2025, more than twice the amount in 2023 and 2024 combined.
Banks and investment firms are expected to raise their spending on technology to $1.1trn by 2029.
Regulatory changes and reduced financial hurdles are making mergers simpler and more attractive.
Recent deals, such as those by Fifth Third Bank and Huntington Bancshares, show increased confidence in regulatory approval.
