Indian Economy Growth Revised Amid US Tariffs and Air Traffic
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has adjusted India's economic growth forecast for the current year to 6.5%, even though the economy had a strong start.
This change is due to expected impacts from new US tariffs, which are projected to slow down India's exports.
Although growth will be less than originally anticipated, factors like healthy domestic demand and service exports will help.
Simultaneously, passenger traffic is likely to slow to post-covid lows.
Lower inflation led the central bank to reduce interest rates to aid growth.
The government's spending increased, widening the fiscal deficit, but the current account deficit is expected to remain stable.
ADB lowered India's FY26 growth forecast to 6.5% due to US tariffs.
India's air passenger traffic growth in FY26 is expected to be the lowest post-Covid.
US tariffs will reduce growth, particularly in the second half of FY26 and FY27.
Inflation forecast is lowered to 3.1% for FY26.
The Reserve Bank of India cut the repo rate to 5.5% by June 2025.
