Supreme Court Allows Widow to Settle Loan on Relaxed Terms
A woman named Sumaiya Parveen lost her husband during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Her husband had taken a loan from a bank and mortgaged their house as security.
After he passed away, the loan became overdue, and the bank wanted a lot of money.
The bank offered a settlement deal, but the woman couldn't pay the full amount on time.
She asked the court for help.
The Supreme Court, which is the highest court in India, said she could pay a smaller amount to settle the loan.
They gave her eight weeks to pay Rs 33 lakh.
If she pays this amount, the bank has to give back the papers of their house.
The court said this decision is only for this special case and not for others.
The Supreme Court allowed Sumaiya Parveen to settle her deceased husband's loan on relaxed terms.
The loan was taken from the Central Bank of India, with the residential property in Vellore district as security.
The bank initially offered a one-time settlement (OTS) of Rs 34.69 lakh, but the petitioner could not pay the full amount on time.
The Supreme Court directed the bank to accept Rs 33 lakh from the petitioner and release the title deeds upon payment.
The court made it clear that this relief is specific to this case and not a precedent for others.
