India's consumer retail deals hit six-year low
In the first half of 2026, the number of mergers, acquisitions, and private equity investments in India's consumer and retail sector was high, but the total value of these deals was the lowest in six years.
Investors are being more cautious due to global uncertainty and are focusing on smaller, high-growth segments like wellness and digital-first brands.
Despite this, industry experts believe in the long-term potential of the sector and expect deal activity to continue, albeit at a more disciplined pace.
The consumer and retail sector in India saw 240 transactions in H1 2026, the third-highest first-half deal count since the post-pandemic recovery began in CY2022.
The cumulative value of these transactions fell to $2.3 billion, the lowest first-half deal value in six years.
Investors are avoiding large bets due to global uncertainty and are focusing on capital preservation.
Specialized, high-growth segments like wellness, premium personal care, nutrition, and digital-first consumer brands are attracting disproportionate investor interest.
Despite the decline in deal values, industry executives remain optimistic about the medium-term outlook due to favourable demographics and rising disposable incomes.
