Madras HC Orders Replies on Mekedatu Amendment
The Madras High Court is asking Tamil Nadu officials and the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti to explain their side of a dispute about a dam called Mekedatu.
The dam would be built on the Cauvery River, which flows through several states.
A political party in Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK, says the law that was passed to set up a special tribunal for the dam was made without proper discussion.
The court wants the officials to reply in two weeks.
The chief minister of Tamil Nadu also wrote to the Prime Minister to make sure the dam project follows earlier court decisions and agreements about water sharing.
The court has put the case on hold while it waits for these replies.
Madras High Court directed Tamil Nadu officials and the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti to file responses within two weeks to AIADMK’s petition.
The petition challenges an amendment urging a tribunal for the Mekedatu dam, which AIADMK, PMK, and CPI opposed.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging protection of lower riparian states and alignment with the CWDT Award.
The petition claims the amendment was not in the circulated resolution and was forwarded to the Union Government as if unanimous.
The court adjourned the case after hearing the petition.
