Study Finds Past Polluter Emissions Will Shape Climate for Centuries

Study Finds Past Polluter Emissions Will Shape Climate for Centuries

Scientists studied pollution from major oil, gas, coal and cement producers.

They found that carbon dioxide released in the past can keep warming the planet for hundreds of years.

This is because much of the gas stays in the air and traps heat.

Stopping emissions tomorrow would not make the climate return to its old state immediately.

The study says past pollution could contribute to more climate disasters in the coming decades.

Dargan Frierson of the University of Washington said the amount of future warming can be estimated.

He also said responsibility for the effects could continue far into the future.

The findings may influence decisions about fossil fuels and legal claims against polluters.
