New Funicular Cuts Shri Malanggad Shrine Travel Time
A new funicular railway has been opened to the Shri Malanggad shrine in the Malang Gad mountains near Kalyan.
This railway makes the trip much faster, taking just four minutes instead of the old 2 to 3-hour climb up 2,500 steps.
The funicular is the longest in India, stretching 1.2 km and climbing up to 400 meters high.
It can carry 90 passengers at a time and costs Rs 150 for a round trip.
The idea came from a visit to Switzerland in 2004, and the project took many years to complete.
The shrine is also known for a controversy about whether it was originally a Hindu shrine or a Sufi saint's dargah.
A new 1.2 km funicular railway reduces travel time to Shri Malanggad shrine from 2-3 hours to 4 minutes.
The railway replaces a 2,500-step climb, making the journey easier for elderly, children, and those with health issues.
The funicular is the longest in India, with a 33-degree incline and a capacity of 90 passengers per trip.
The project, initiated in 2004 and completed in 2012, cost Rs 150 crore and faced construction challenges.
The shrine is the subject of a controversy over its religious origins, claimed by both Hindu and Sufi traditions.
