Remembering Sarat Chandra Bose, Netaji’s Mentor and Partition Opponent
Sarat Chandra Bose was the older brother of Subhas Chandra Bose, also known as Netaji.
He was a lawyer and a fighter for India’s freedom.
Subhas trusted Sarat and asked for his advice before leaving the Indian Civil Service.
Sarat supported his brother even though many relatives disagreed with Subhas’s decision.
The two brothers also worked toward a Bengal government that included Hindus and Muslims equally.
Sarat strongly opposed dividing Bengal during Partition.
He wanted Bengal to remain united, independent, and socially fair.
Sarat’s grandsons recently shared stories about the brothers’ lives and ideas.
They also discussed a family memoir about the Bose brothers.
Sarat Chandra Bose’s 137th birth anniversary was marked on Sunday.
His grandsons discussed his close relationship with his younger brother, Subhas Chandra Bose.
Subhas sought Sarat’s support before resigning from the Indian Civil Service in 1920-21.
Sarat opposed Partition and campaigned for a sovereign, united Bengal with equal Hindu-Muslim representation.
The Netaji Research Bureau event also highlighted a translated family memoir published in 2016.
