HITO Petitions Against East Jaintia Hills Cement Plant
A group in Meghalaya called HITO has asked the central government to stop a planned cement factory in East Jaintia Hills.
They say the factory will harm the environment and the way people there live and farm.
The factory needs a lot of water, which might make it hard for farmers to grow rice.
HITO wants the government to protect the land and water and reject the project.
They sent their request to important officials, including the environment minister and the chief minister of Meghalaya.
HITO has petitioned the Centre to scrap the proposed cement plant in East Jaintia Hills.
The project is incompatible with the local environment and traditional livelihoods, according to HITO.
Shree Cement Company plans to start work next year with a clinker production capacity of 0.95mt per annum.
HITO demands the cancellation of environmental clearance and protection of the ecological integrity of Daistong village.
The project requires 600KLD of water, which could impact paddy cultivation and alter hydrological patterns.
