European Banks to Launch Euro Stablecoin to Counter US Dominance
A group of European banks are creating their own digital money, called a stablecoin, that's worth the same as the Euro.
They hope this will help Europe compete with the United States, which currently dominates the world of digital money with the dollar.
The banks want their new coin to be used for quick and cheap payments.
Some are worried about how this new money will affect existing banks and financial stability, especially because the European Central Bank (ECB) is still unsure.
The project is intended to offer a euro-based option that might encourage Europe to not fall behind in the use of stablecoins.
Nine European banks are forming a company to launch a euro-denominated stablecoin.
The move aims to challenge US dominance in the digital market.
The new company will be based in Amsterdam.
The stablecoin is expected to launch in the second half of next year.
The ECB has expressed skepticism about privately issued stablecoins.
