Funds for Centrally Sponsored Schemes to be Managed by RBI
Imagine the government has money to pay for important programs across the country.
Right now, the government gives this money to states, who then give it to the programs.
Starting next year, the government will work with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which is like the country's bank, to manage these payments.
Instead of giving money to the states first, the government and the states will tell the RBI how much money each program should get.
When a program needs money, the states will ask the central government, who will tell the RBI to pay.
This will help stop delays and ensure money is used correctly.
It should save the government money in the long run.
The Centre will route funds for Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) through the RBI starting November 2025.
This change aims to curb delays and prevent misuse of funds.
The current system involves the Centre transferring funds to state treasuries.
The new mechanism will have State SNAs manage accounts with RBI for each scheme.
This is expected to save the Centre approximately Rs 6,000 crore in interest costs.
